This is LYMPHEDEMA.
This could happen to you
just as easily as it did this young lady.
The surgeon cut off the end of her second toe because of a melanoma.
Then he made an 8" cut at the top of her leg, removed 27 of the approximately 39 lymph nodes.
Now, there is no where for the lymph fluid to go.
This happened on September 20, 2005 (her wedding anniversary).
These pictures were taken today, April 26, 2011.
She is now 42 years old.
She said it took only a month to swell to this size.
The work I do with her, every other week gives her a lighter feeling leg, less swelling, and above all, hope that someday her leg can be as shapely as the other one again.
Today, I told her about a 44 year old that lost both breasts to cancer on Good Friday, April 22nd.
She said she was a little jealous; the woman could have reconstruction and at least look natural again.
She also said to never take life for granted because, like her, it can change over night.
